Welcome to Bethells Beach Junior Surf Season 2017/18!

Our aim is to provide all Junior Surf Members with essential surf safety skills, rescue information and basic first aid along with gaining surf sports skills.  Good fun and building overall confidence also underpins everything we do!

Our Junior Surf programme ensures that everyone from the ages of 5 through to 13 learn as much as possible about surf beaches and being safe in the water, along with being able to take part in a variety of surf sports competitions from a participation level through to the serious competitors.

By the time our Junior Surf members reach the age of 14 they are fully prepared and ready to progress to their first lifeguard award, the Bronze Certificate.

Junior Surf Life Saving Age Groups

In Junior Surf at Bethells Beach our age groups are split into the following all with 2-3 dedicated coaches (who are mostly surf lifeguards)

  • 5-6 years – AA Group
  • 7-9 years – A Group
  • 10-11 years – B Group
  • 12-13 years – C Group

It’s a Family Affair

Parents are needed as an active part of Junior Surf and all parents will be asked to pitch in and help as it is only volunteers that make Junior Surf happen.  The Club will pay for parents to attend Officials and Surf Coaching courses along with parents being able to take their Surf Life Saving Certificate to learn valuable skills in basic Surf Life Saving. This doesn’t mean that you have to become a Surf Life Saver and start Patrols … although many parents have gone on to do their Bronze Award and loved it!

We run a ‘Surf 101’ session at the start of every season for new parents which helps to provide information and confidence for parents to be actively involved with Junior Surf.  The session is run by former Junior Surf parents who are now lifeguards so are well qualified to provide parents with everything they need to know.

Our Junior Surf Sessions

Our Junior Surf sessions are held every Sunday at Bethells Beach with assembly time at the Surf Club House at 10.30am and the sessions starting at 10.45am through to approximately 12.00pm for AAs and A Group and 12.30-1.00pm for B and C Groups.

Every Monday there is a swim fitness session at Kelston Girls High School Pool from 6 to 7pm, kicking off 16thOctober 2017.  The sessions are facilitated and the aim is to improve overall swimming fitness. It is important to note that the sessions are not swimming lessons and it is a base requirement that our Junior Surf members are able to swim at least 25 metres in the pool unaided (no parents in the pool).

On Fridays, we hold additional trainings at Mairangi Bay beach from 6-7pm for Junior Surf members who are serious about participating in the surf sports competitions.
